VIYAC Voices Telling It Like It Is: Indigenous Youth People on Education
This report is the second of a series of publications that VIYAC aims to produce.
'VIYAC Voices Telling It Like It Is: Indigenous Youth People on Education' provides insight into the personal experiences of Indigenous young people when participating in an education system developed primary for non-Indigenous people. It generates a deeper level of understanding by the non-Indigenous and wider community.
As an advocacy service for Indigenous young people in Victoria, this publication provides VIYAC and Indigenous youth with an opportunity to talk about the issues they face when attending mainstream education institutions.
This publication explores the challenges faced by Indigenous young people in education, as well as the positive factors that assist them in engaging and succeeding.
VIYAC aspires to see more support provided to Indigenous young people within the education system.
We anticipates this publication to be utilised by mainstream and Indigenous organisations to assist in developing a deeper understanding of the issues faced by Indigenous youth in education and to gain ideas for effective improvement.

Community Spirit Police Awards 2011
In June 2011, VIYAC hosted the Community Spirit Police Awards Event at Federation Square (ACMI) in Melbourne CBD.
This award is an effort by VIYAC to recognise the work of some police members who are doing good work with Indigenous young people and their communities in Victoria.
The event was successful with many community members, Indigenous young people and government representatives in attendance to support VIYAC's initiative and acknowledge the awarded police members.
Victorian Police Deputy Commissioner, Kieran Walshe, attended the event on behalf of Victoria Police.
Winners of this years event:
- The "Acknowledgement Award" was awarded to Acting Senior Sergeant Brian Buckley from Collingwood Police Station
- The "Runner Up Award" was awarded to Senior Constable Les Power from Horsham Police Station
- The "Community Spirit Police Award" was awarded to Leading Senior Constable Ray Moreland from Lakes Entrance Police Station
VIYAC would like to provide a special acknowledgement to all police nominees who are each demonstrating great leadership and positive relationships in working with Indigenous youth in their local areas.
