VIYAC stands for the Victorian Indigenous Youth Advisory Council.
VIYAC is a state-wide network of volunteer Indigenous young people between 12 and 25 years who provide a voice to government and community on issues of importance to them. VIYAC is an avenue for Indigenous young people to come together and voice their ideas, passions and interests, in a safe, structured and supportive environment. VIYAC is committed to supporting and encouraging all who become involved to build their skills and capacity.
VIYAC receives funding support from Aboriginal Affairs Victoria. It is a community based volunteer program, which is not for profit.
VIYAC Aims and Objectives
- To be a voice for Indigenous youth & be heard by the Government.
- To bring Indigenous youth and the broader community together.
- Promote a sense of pride in being young and Indigenous.
- Improve quality of life for Indigenous youth.
- Prepare Indigenous youth to be future leaders.
- To provide positive role models & support to youth to realize their independence.
- To make Indigenous youth aware of the opportunities that are available to them.
How is VIYAC structured?
The VIYAC consists of approximately 20 young Indigenous people from across the whole state that volunteer as members. These members meet every few months and spend time discussing issues of importance to them.
The VIYAC Reference Group
The Reference Group is made up of approximately ten volunteer Indigenous community members and government agency members, Yacvic representatives and Government representatives. The Reference Group acts as a support network for VIYAC offering guidance, contacts and advice. The Reference Group meets four times a year.
VIYAC is housed at YACVic
The Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic) is the peak body representing the youth sector in Victoria and provides a means through which the youth sector and young people can voice their opinions and concerns in regard to issues and policies affecting them. YACVic is a not for profit community organization.
Funding
VIYAC is funded by Aboriginal Affairs Victoria (AAV) The Department of Victorian Communities (DVC). The VIYAC works independently.
